How to Maintain the Reducer of Heavy Transfer Trolley

The reducer is one of the core transmission components of a heavy transfer trolley. It transmits torque from the motor to the drive wheels, reduces rotating speed and increases output torque to support heavy load operation. Proper regular maintenance can greatly extend its service life, prevent sudden faults, and avoid production downtime of the trolley. Below is the complete maintenance guide.

1. Routine Daily Inspection

Perform a quick check before or after each shift operation.

· Listen carefully to the running sound of the reducer. Abnormal noise, knocking or humming means possible gear meshing failure, bearing damage or loose internal parts.

· Check the outer shell for oil leakage. Pay special attention to the input shaft seal, output shaft seal and flange joint. Oil leakage will cause insufficient lubrication quickly.

· Check the surface temperature. Under normal working condition, the temperature rise should stay within a reasonable range. Overheating usually relates to overload, lack of oil or bearing failure.

· Confirm the fixing bolts are tight. Vibration from heavy load operation may loosen the reducer mounting bolts gradually.

2. Lubrication Oil Management

Lubrication is the most important part of reducer maintenance.

· Use the recommended industrial gear oil specified by the reducer manufacturer. Do not mix different brands or types of gear oil.

For the first run-in period (usually the first 100~300 working hours), replace the gear oil after run-in. Metal wear debris generated during run-in must be cleaned out.

· Change the gear oil regularly. For continuous heavy-duty working conditions, replace oil every 6~12 months or every 2000 working hours, whichever comes first.

· Before oil change, stop the trolley, cut off power, wait for the reducer to cool down. Drain the old oil completely, clean the inner cavity, then fill new oil to the marked oil level window. Do not overfill or underfill the oil.

· Check oil quality periodically. If the oil turns dark, contains metal particles or becomes emulsified, replace it in advance.

3. Periodic Disassembly and Inspection

Carry out full inspection at fixed maintenance cycles, usually once every 1~2 years for heavy transfer trolleys.

· Disassemble the reducer and inspect the gear teeth. Check for pitting, wear, broken teeth or surface fatigue.

· Inspect bearings. Check clearance, rotation smoothness and wear degree. Replace bearings if there is obvious play or noise.

· Replace worn oil seals, gaskets and sealing rings to prevent future oil leakage.

· Clean all internal parts, check the coupling and shaft alignment. Misalignment will create extra vibration and accelerate gear wear.

4. Operating Condition Control

Correct operation reduces reducer damage fundamentally.

· Never run the transfer trolley beyond the rated load. Long-term overload operation is the top cause of reducer early failure.

· Avoid frequent hard starting, sudden braking and violent reversing. Impact load will damage gears and bearings.

· Keep the working environment clean. Prevent dust, metal chips and water from entering the reducer through seals.

· If the trolley works in high temperature, humid or corrosive environment, shorten the maintenance interval and upgrade sealing protection.

5. Fault Handling and Storage

· When abnormal noise, overheating or oil leakage appears, stop the trolley immediately and cut off power. Do not keep running with faults.

· If the trolley will be stored for a long time, drain the old gear oil, apply anti-rust oil on gears and bearings, seal all openings, and store it in dry ventilated place.

Conclusion

Consistent and standardized reducer maintenance protects the heavy transfer trolley transmission system. It lowers unexpected failure rate, reduces repair cost, and guarantees stable and safe heavy material handling in workshop.
